An intimate relationship can be one of the richest experiences life has to offer, the alchemy of two within the context of a committed, ongoing, mutual union. It may not feel so great when you are in the midst of conflict or facing extreme difficulties, but it is precisely in coming to know and appreciate each other’s differences and strengths that love, pleasure and understanding can deepen. You may be really disappointed and disillusioned at times, but revitalization in a relationship frequently hinges on the undoing of illusions and idealization. In literature and mythology, the moment of betrayal, of being turned away from, not seen, is often the turning point that ushers in the possibility of rebirth and the mobilization of inner resources.

Becoming more of who you are as an individual can nurture your relationship but the dance of coming together and apart can feel treacherous sometimes. Couples therapy makes space for working on your relationship with each other. Allowing a skilled witness to see and experience first hand how the two of you interact and the complexity of what transpires between you might make you feel very vulnerable. With your help I will try to build a safe place for exploration in my presence, and if I prove to be empathic, trustworthy and responsive to your particular needs, therapy can be solid ground for gaining objectivity. Becoming curious again about each other and what is possible between you can restore the trust at the core of your relationship and revitalize desire, humor, hope … the unexpected.
